Permaculture Course

Interested in learning more about planting & growing? ‘Organic gardening for nutrition, using permaculture ethics and principles’ is a free, educational course, running from March until September 2024. It will take place on Fridays, from 2.00pm to 3.30pm at our ELREC plot with Lauriston Farm. Participants are expected to help with planting, weeding, and more – anyone attending a min. of 50% of the sessions is entitled to a share of the harvest. March 15 | Permaculture ethics and principles, planting fruit bushes, planning a crop rotation – You will need: pen and paper.
March 22 | Selecting seed varieties to reduce pests and diseases. Applying organic fertilisers.
March 29 | Planting seed potatoes, onion setts and broad beans. You will need to bring trowels.
April 05 | Sowing ‘Mediterranean’ seed in small pots and propagators: beans, winter squash,
Courgette – Participants asked to propagate some seeds at their homes
April 12 | Sowing temperate crops (cabbage, calabrese, celeriac, kale, leeks, beetroot)
April 19 | Compost making, conserving soil health with no-dig – You will need to bring a small bag of food waste
April 26 | Sowing salad crops in raised beds (carrots, lettuce, spring onions, radish, rocket)
May 3 | Managing pests naturally – Part I
May 10 | Making natural fertilisers: comfrey tea, seaweed
May 17 | Transplanting French beans
May 24 | Transplanting squashes and courgettes
May 31 | Avoiding slug damage
June 7 | Conserving beneficial insects
June 14 | Nitrogen-fixing crops
June 21 | Harvesting and drying garlic
June 28 | Harvesting and drying onions
July 5 | Selecting nutritious crops for autumn and winter
July 12 | Managing pest naturally – Part II
July 19 | Pruning fruit bushes
July 26 | Harvesting and storing potatoes – You will need to bring large paper sacks.
Sept 6 | Harvesting and sowing green manure
Sept 13 | Re-planting strawberries
Sept 20 | Seed saving – You will need to bring paper bags/envelopes
Sept 27 | Storing and conserving vegetables
