Ageism

Ageism, also called age discrimination, is when you are treated unfavourably because of your age. Under the Equality Act, you are protected from age discrimination in all aspects of your employment including recruitment, employment terms and conditions, promotions and transfers, training and dismissals.

The Equality Act protects you from direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

Age discrimination may be deeply engrained in the workplace. Although the law prohibits age discrimination, you can help change attitudes by:

§ understanding, or developing, local policies on age discrimination.

§ speaking out when age discrimination cases arise.

§ publicising that age discrimination is prohibited by law.

§ encouraging managers to take a strong lead on age discrimination.

If you feel you have been discriminated against regarding ageism issues, please contact ELREC for support and advice.
