Join our upcoming RBGE workshop on ‘Home-made gifts’ on Friday at 1:30pm. It is the time of the year when everyone feels the pressure to have to buy presents, Elinor would like to share an alternative idea of a gift, something that has been made by you.
Elinor can show you how to make your own mincemeat to fill your own mince pies. If we have time, she can show you the basics of how to make a wreath.
If you would like to share some of the things you’ve made, please feel free to show us on the day, hopefully we can inspire others to do something.
If you’d like to make the mincemeat while Elinor is demonstrating it, here’s the recipe:
You will need- chopping board, sharp knife, grater, a big bowl to mix all the ingredients and 3X 500mls jars or 4 jars of 350ml
250 g dried figs
1 cooking apple- grated
200 g currants if you don’t like raisons or sultanas, replace with cranberries, cherries, plums?
150g golden sultanas
75g candied orange peel- if not keen on these, replace with other candied fruit, ginger?
75g almond, roughly chopped
150g vegetable suet
250g dark muscovado sugar- any dark sugar will do
1 teaspoon mixed spice -( if you don’t have mixed spice, then mix your own, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg)
Zest and juice of 3 oranges
100 ml orange liqueur- I don’t usually have this, so I use any other alcohol, it’s fine.
The mixture of Sugar and alcohol, it’s what preserves it
